Firm History
Formed in 1994 by Jean Nouvel and Michel Pélissié, Ateliers Jean Nouvel is one of the largest architectural practices in France with over 140 multicultural professionals. AJN specializes in architecture, urban design, landscape design, graphic design, industrial design, interior design, model making, and image production. In the near future, the AJN team will also be comfortable working with 3D modeling and conceptual-phase computer graphics. Nouvel is recognized as one of the world’s most innovative architects. The primary focus of Jean Nouvel is of space and light rather than form and he uses conceptual rigor instead of an overarching aesthetic. Nouvel typically uses glass in his buildings due to the fascinating things achievable by such a material. AJN has designed a vast array of buildings, over 200 worldwide; consisting of museums, theaters, hotels, concert halls, conference centers, collective housing, private residences, commercial centers, and office buildings. Earlier successes such as the Arab World Institute, Lyon’s Opera House, and the Vinci Conference Center led to numerous other commissions which will also transform the landscapes in which they are built and often become major urban events all on their own.

Jean Nouvel

Jean Nouvel was born in 1945 at Fumel, France. He worked in the architecture practice of Claude Parent and Paul Virilio until recieving his diploma in 1972 from the École des Beaux-Arts when he had his own office in partnership with François Seigneur and Gilbert Lezénés. In 1981, Nouvel won the design competition for the Arab World Institute building in Paris. He has won several awards including the title of Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et Lettres, a silver medal by the Academie d’Architecture, the Grand Prix d’Architecture for his architecture, the “Equerre d’Argent” for the Institut de Monde Arabe, an honourable mention for the Aga Khan Prize,  the “Equerre d’Argent” for the Lyon Opera House, and was named Honorary Fellow of the American Institute of Architects.
