The company was founded in 1927 by John J. Flad, who was a former apprentice of Frank Lloyd Wright. The practice first began by designing churches and residential homes throughout the Madison, Wisconsin area. The firm was first recognized by the Architectural Forum magazine in 1936 for their design of the Erickson Home for the Madison Small Homes Bureau. Since then they have made a major shift from churches and homes to innovative facilities, often partnering with research organizations, universities, and healthcare institutions. Today, they continue to be innovators of design with an emphasis on the philosophy of “People inspiring architecture”, and strong attention to detail.
