History:
Bohlin Cywinski Jackson (BCJ) was founded in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania  in 1965 when Peter Bohlin and Bernard Cywinski decided to merge their two small firms. Since the merger, BCJ has grown to over 200 architects lead by 12 principles. BCJ has also added four additional offices in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Seattle, and San Francisco. The firm believes in a collaborative way of doing business rather than a hierarchy model of business, because of this there is no private offices in charge of each studio, everyone is allowed to work together and collaborate among each other (1). Bohlin believes that an “interactive, balanced, more egalitarian, more collegiate” studio organization, where employees are encouraged to “[cycle] through all types of projects so they can draw lessons” (1). This has allowed BCJ to become a firm which has a vast range of projects. Their work varies from small residential households, such as the Forest House in Connecticut, to massive cooperate headquarters, such as the Pixar Studio Headquarters in California. BCJ’s “work is known for exceptional design, for its commitment to the particularity of place and user, and for an extraordinary aesthetic based on a quiet rigor which is both intellectual and intuitive” (2). Bohlin Cywinski Jackson has received over 420 awards, including the AIA Architecture Firm Award in 1994, and cofounder Perter Bohlin received the AIA Gold Medal in 2010.

Peter Bohlin:
Peter Bohlin is the unofficial president of Bohlin Cywinski Jackson. Bohlin received his Bachelor of Architecture from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and then went on to receive his Master of Architecture from Cranbrook Academy. After Bohlin received his masters he decided to return home to Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania and, along with Bernard Cywinski, founded Bohlin Cywinski Jackson. Peter Bohlin has had a great influence on a majority of BCJ’s projects; his favorites include Seattle City Hall, several Apple stores, the Forest House, the Shelly Ridge Girl Scout Center, and Ballard Library and Neighborhood Service (1). In 2010, Peter Bohlin was awarded the AIA Gold Medal by the American Institute of Architects. Bohlin is just the 66th repentant of this very prestigious award; previous winners include Thomas Jefferson, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Buckminster Fuller (3). Peter Bohlin is one of America’s true great Architects, and at the age of 74 is still a very valuable part of Bohlin Cywinski Jackson.
